The Issue
My two children were molested by my ex-husband. After over three years of grueling court battles and exposing my children to further trauma when they bravely testified, his attorney secured a plea deal. This deal resulted in only 4 years of probation, no jail time, and worst of all, no requirement for him to be listed on the sexual offender registry. Despite pleading guilty to molesting my children for years, he got off with what feels like a slap on the wrist.
This experience is not unique to my family. Far too many families watch predators who destroy the innocence of children walk away with minimal consequences. It is beyond comprehension that anyone who sexually abuses a child could avoid mandatory registration as a sexual offender. The absence of such a mandate jeopardizes the safety of children and communities everywhere.
Research indicates that child abusers pose a high risk of re-offending. According to the National Sex Offender Public Website, child predators statistically have very high recidivism rates compared to other criminals. This reality makes it essential for the legal system to prioritize the protection of children by requiring that all individuals convicted of child sexual abuse be mandatorily placed on the sexual offender list.
Immediate changes to the legal protocols governing sex offenses against children are necessary. The existing system allows offenders to evade long-term consequences through plea bargains and legal technicalities. By ensuring every conviction includes registration on the offender list, we can maintain greater oversight on these individuals and protect potential future victims.
Our goal is to petition lawmakers to revise the legislation governing sex offender registration. We demand that all persons convicted of any form of child sexual abuse must be placed on the sexual offender registry, irrespective of plea deals or reductions in charges. This will enhance child safety and ensure that communities are appropriately informed.
Together, we can push for a change that holds child abusers accountable and helps prevent further victimization. Please sign this petition to call for a necessary change in protecting our children.
